Culture in SLC

Last month was the 25th annual Living Traditions Festival. This is a three day festival held in downtown SLC where they have booths showing different cultures arts and crafts, stages that host traditional music and dances, and of course (my favorite part) lots and lots of ethnic food booths!

Our first attempt to attend the festival was thwarted by the evil Utah weather -- it snowed. Yes you read that right on May 22, 2010 it snowed in downtown Salt Lake City!

Determined to expose the lovies to a culture besides redneck, white, Mormon what they see everyday Yai Yai and I took our chances with the weather and headed downtown Sunday after church.

The weather cooperated for the most part - it of course started to get cold after we bought the girls a delicious macadamia nut ice cream covered in Hawaiian shaved ice... yeah I know it was delicious.

We met up with Aunty "Bewf" and Uncle Lorenzo (the lovies haven't even tried to say that yet HA) and had fun walking around checking out the booths. Yai Yai and I shared a falafel sandwich, the girls picked at some teriyaki chicken, and I spent over 20 minutes waiting for some Navajo fry bread (well worth it). Aunty Beth had a amazing plate of Tibetan food and some kind of chocolate/cherry/whipped cream thing. MMMMMM

Now we didn't just eat the whole time. We also took in a show. We watched the Khemera Cambodian Dancers which were basically the same as the Thai Monkey King dance. The lovies, especially Lanna, LOVED it. She kept asking where the monkey went.

After that it started to get cold and lovies started to turn evil so we headed home. I definitely plan to make this a yearly tradition - I didn't get to try nearly enough food!

Note: ignore the mommy frumpiness - I've already told Beth not to let me out in public looking like that EVER again!
